Australian aboriginals were using aromatic plants 40,000 years before Christ. The ancient Indian, Chinese, Egyptian, Babylonian, Greek, Aztec, Mayan and Inca civilizations were also aware of the therapeutic properties of aromatic essences. Around the year 1000 AD, the Arabs appeared to have discovered the process of steam distillation of pure essential oils. In the 15th century, the European apothecaries (the pharmacists of the time) named themselves the aromaterii. It is undeniable that essential oils and aromatic essences occupied a central part of ancient pharmacopoeias.

In the 19th century a French researcher, Chamberland, studied the antiseptic properties of essential oils. Soon after, aromatic medicine would be forgotten until the French chemist and perfumer, René-Maurice Gattefossé, coined the term ‘aromatherapy’ in 1928. This is the name he gave to this new science after experiencing the effectiveness of lavender essential oil healing his burned hands after a laboratory accident in 1918. This experience allowed the development of a true modern science used by doctors in Europe and elsewhere in the world to treat minor and serious pathologies. In 1975, aromatologist P. Franchomme with Dr. Daniel Pénoël discovered the importance of the chemotype which allowed for a better understanding of the therapeutic effectiveness of essential oils by reducing the secondary effects and risks of toxicity.
